Local SEO for Freetown businesses: a 10-step checklist
Most people in Freetown search on their phones and name the place they are in. Here are ten practical steps that help your business show up when they do.
When someone in Freetown searches for "electrician near me" or "printing shop Freetown", Google shows a short list of local businesses before it shows anything else. Getting on that list is called local SEO, and most of it is free. It rewards businesses that are clear, consistent and easy to contact.
Here is the checklist I would work through for any small business in Sierra Leone.
1. Claim your Google Business Profile
This is the single most useful free step. Search for your business name on Google and claim the listing, or create one. Choose the most accurate main category (for example "Printing shop", not just "Shop") and add the services you really offer.
2. Describe your location the way people say it
Many places in Freetown are known by landmarks rather than street numbers. Enter the clearest address you can, then mention nearby landmarks in your description and on your website's contact page. A visitor who cannot find you will not become a customer, however well you rank.
3. Keep your name, phone number and address identical everywhere
Use the same spelling and the same phone number on your website, Google, Facebook and any directory. Small differences ("Ltd" in one place and not another) make it harder for Google to trust that these are one business.
4. Put the service and the city in your page titles
A page title like "Home" tells Google nothing. "Wedding photography in Freetown | Studio Name" tells it exactly what the page is about and where. Do this for every important page, and write a short, honest description underneath.
5. Make the site work well on a phone
Most visitors will arrive on a phone, often on a slow connection. If your page takes too long to show, people leave and Google ranks you lower. Compress your images, remove scripts you do not need and test the site on a real phone.
6. Make contact effortless
Add a tap-to-call button and a WhatsApp link on every page. Put your opening hours on the contact page. If you take bookings or orders, say how.
7. Ask for reviews and answer every one
After a good job, ask the customer to leave a Google review and send them the link. Reply to each review, including the critical ones, calmly and politely. Reviews help people decide, and they are one of the clearest signals for local results.
8. Write about the questions your customers ask
Every business hears the same questions again and again. Answer them on your website in plain language: how much things depend on, how long they take, what to prepare. These pages bring in people who are already looking for what you do.
9. Get mentioned by other local sites
A link from a school, a partner, a local organisation or a news story tells Google that real people know you. Do not buy links in bulk. A few relevant ones from places that actually know your work are worth far more.
10. Let Google find your pages, then check what it sees
Create a free Google Search Console account, verify your site and submit your sitemap. Check the indexing report every few weeks. It tells you which pages Google has found and which it could not read, and it shows the searches that bring people to you.
How long does it take?
Plan in weeks and months, not days. Nobody can honestly promise a first-place ranking, because Google decides, and your competitors are working on this too. What you can control is being the clearest, fastest and most helpful result for your area.
